Before there was a specific recognized standard, most of the aerospace companies used ISO 9000 as a method of qualifying their requirements and documents like that automotive Q standard and the D1-9000 from Boeing.
After that, the well-established aerospace manufacturers in America put together all their efforts to create one unified standard that they called AS9000 or simply the Aerospace Basic Quality Standard. After the release of AS9000, leading aerospace organizations like Boeing stopped the use of the previous quality documentation processes and shifted to the new AS9000 standard.
In 2000, the AS group worked for hand in hand with ISO (International Organization for Standardization). Their work was to rewrite the AS9000 and the product was released to the international aerospace industry as AS9100. The release was done alongside the new version of ISO 9000. In the meantime, AS9100 Rev. C was published in Jan 2009.
An efficient QMS is crucial because you will be sure that the aerospace company meets the needs of its customers and the other stakeholders. In simple terms, we can express the QMS as an organizational structure, resources, procedures, and decision-making approaches that are required to implement quality management.
QMS is a necessity for aerospace companies and that is why they are required to have a certification in AS9100. It is the only way to prove to the current and potential customers that they are implementing their QMS effectively. The certification has the requirements that aerospace companies that wish to meet the standard should fulfill. It also includes the constant improvement on the organizations’ QMS.
Apart from looking into the eight principles of management like mutually beneficial relationships with suppliers, factual approach in decision making, continual improvement, system approach to management, process approach, people involvement, leadership, and customer focus, the AS9100 standard also has additional requirements with regard to the aerospace regulatory compliance.
These include the control of production equipment machining programs, product documentation, subcontractor performance review and approval, testing and validation processes, design verification, and configuration management.
